When i pick my dog up he wont let my daughter stroke him he growls and bares his teeth?

he growled last week when she went towards him when i picked him up today he growled but bared his teeth i told him off and banished him outside for ten minutes why is he doing this she feeds him plays with him never has she played rough with him he is 17 month old bull terrier anyone have any answers please
